Football, Religion, and Bursting Bubbles
So, when I moved to Dallas – one of the first things that WE told me about this place was that people in Texas cling to 2 things: their guns and their religion. I believe him. But there is one thing he forgot to mention…
…that for Texans football is a religion. Just this weekend, a crazy storm coupled with high speed winds toppled the Dallas Cowboys practice field bubble (all happened AS they were inside practicing – well the rookie team anyway).
So for starters, why the %*?! were they still in there playing with such a crazy storm a brewin’ outside anyway? Like I said, people do crazy things in the name of religion.
Also, as the Cowboys are to religion, apparently J. Jones is to god. Let me illustrate. So as WE and I were watching the news broadcast we were just as alarmed as everyone else, hoping that no one inside got crushed by the aluminum skeleton of the bubble that crashed down. The news anchor had a camera man onsight (apparently they were there when it crashed, because the guy was filming live footage of the fall) that was capturing the chaos that ensued as football players, staff, and emergency teams rushed to and fro searching for the injured and trying to account for all the people that were supposedly there. Just as the on-sight camera man was getting to the good stuff – the news anchor interrupted with breaking new that they were going to get the real scoop from the infamous J. Jones. Only guess what… he wasn’t even in the state, rather he was hob-nobbin’ it at the Kentucky Derby. Hmm…the only explaination for that news anchor move would be that J. Jones is in fact all-powerful and all-knowing.
Well, they say that sooner or later if you live here long enough – you’ll convert. I’m skeptical. From my vantage point, until the Cowboys can command the elements I’ll stick to rootin’ for my own god…or at least the Broncos anyway.

Yeah, that was one thing I remembered about Oklahoma too. Football and church…I wouldn’t want to do a poll to see which is more important. Moving to the coasts it’s been different. N Carolina was all about basketball. California has an unending stream of fanatical voices about global warming and gay marriage.
I was sad to read that one of the assistant coaches was injured, and is now paralyzed from the neck down. It’s too bad.
You don’t want to know what people here in Vegas substitute for religion. Although, just think of all things sinful *gasp* tossed in with a little absurdity, and you will have hit the nail on the head. I love my town.
Are you sure you don’t have me confused with then-Senator Obama?
Yes, I’m sure. I didn’t even know who the then-senator was at the time =)
