The Pig vs. The Kolache Mama
When I first moved to Dallas, someone asked me if I wanted to sell Kolaches at our next United Way fundraiser at work. I asked them, “What the heck is a Kolache?” They went on to describe a tasty treat in exquisit detail and as it turns out it was in fact…

Okay, people – I know that Texans live in their own little (well actually pretty big) world sometimes. But this is NOT a kolache. A kolache (as I learned from Wiki!) is a fruit-filled pastry that originated from the Czech Republic. This, my friends is a SAUSAGE roll. Or as we Okies prefer to call it – a Pig in a Blanket.
So how in the world is it that my fellow Texans have it so wrong??? (Gasp!)
Here’s my guess:
1) Texan enters Kolache Mama bakery

2) Texan orders 10 kolaches after perusing the goodies behind the glass.
3) The kind Kolache Mama clerk (who, btw, looks just like the logo above and likes to wink becasue she speaks no english) places 5 kolaches and 5 pigs in the bag.
4) Texan pays and leaves.
5) Texan is now forever tainted thinking that meat=fruit and fruit=meat.
Well, don’t worry ya’ll…I’m happy to set the record straight!

This is texas! fruit is meat!
those look SOOOOO good right now. why am I hungry!?!??!
I think I had a kolache with meat AND cheese in it, like breakfast burrito style. I’ve never had a fruit filled kolache. But you’re right, that is a pig in a blanket. So, can we start calling you the Kolache Mama?
